Maybe I haven't figured it out yet but is there a notification of a private message, or do you have to go to inbox to see if you have a message? I received a message but didn't know I did and found it several days later.

It wouldn't surprise me if the settings aren't the best. I was expecting a response to one that I haven't seen yet, so I'm sure some checkbox is not checked like it should be.

I haven't received a private message yet, but I believe individual members can choose their private messaging settings.

      1. While logged in, click Forum Actions on the main menu bar at the top of the page.
      2. Click General Settings.
      3. Scroll down to Private Messaging settings. Here you can decide whether you do or do not want email notifications as well as change a number of other settings.

yes that works, but would probably be better if the default was to have those turned on- there are probably many more who are unaware this is default off and will have messages sitting there indefinitely rather than the opposite (if people are bothered by that they can turn off)

Yeah, I bet Craig can set that to default to being enabled and I agree it's probably better that way.

Just checked the back end options. All I can do is turn on the option to have PM or not. It IS on. Whether or not you want it remains a personal choice. IOW - the system is ON, but the default selection for everyone is OFF.

            Thanks for the tutorial Cesare.

Thanks Cesare, not sure who is going to write me, but now I am ready...

What do you do when a person (climbhoser) continues to send you PMs after you told him to stop?

Two options, not sure if either would work: (a) give him a hug and be nicer or (b) go to General Settings and uncheck the boxes asking if you want receive messages from various sources.

Well (a) is completely out. As for (b), I want to continue to receive PMs - just not from him. (He's sort of creepy and I don't like direct and private conversation with him.) On the other hand, I can't put him on ignore because he's a source of much comic relief. It's a real conundrum.

This made me laugh. Time for some dry cleaning.

FYI I haven't pm'ed him since he asked me not to. I did issue an infraction with a message attached. Somehow Willy doesn't know the difference. I did that as an obligation to the community to uphold the civility here. Doesn't matter that I was the subject of the attack, and I'm FAR from the only one here that issues him warnings and/or infractions. Dude gets posts reported by other mods every week, whether he knows it or not.

Where do I start with this? First, you weren't the "subject of the attack". You jumped in when I made a completely harmless comment about the types of people that spew on internet forums and the psychology behind it. It wasn't aimed at specific person - just a general comment. You couldn't handle it. It was just WAY too much for your fragile psyche. So you jumped in and (predictably) got your face stomped. Second, I don't care that you, Baaahb and mattJ "report me" on a nearly daily basis. That says a LOT more about the 3 of you than it does me. Third an infraction comes through in exactly the same manner as a PM and when you attach a personalized message to it (which you always do - because you're a little freak) any differences between the two things completely disappear. Either way I'm summoned to my mailbox only to find a creepy message from you. Stop it. I prefer discussions with you to occur "in the open" as it were; you're psycho and weird and I don't like interacting with you privately.

I'm a weird psycho and you're a sociopathic asshole with no good sense about personal conduct. You're lucky you've hidden your real name away from your nick well because if you behaved in real life the way you do on here you'd be sent to a mental ward.

You made a general comment, and I noted that it was ironic, coming from you. The escalation was all yours.

I'm sort of embarrassed for you right now.
