WTF has happened to this community? It seems like only about 6 years ago, every hint of a White House misstep was analyzed, discussed and pilloried before being promptly assigned the label "Worst Thing to Ever Happen in the History of Ever". What's (hope and) changed?

I think it was two birds with one stone. He's been stumped by Guantanamo and could get rid of a few detainees while regaining this deserter. Guys family probably has some clout and has been putting the pressure on. Regardless, I think they're over-confidant after the Bin Laden murder that they can track these Taliban guys.Comment

If you're miffed that some unspecified people were scattershot with their Dubya criticisms, why of course the right thing to do is be exactly the same sort of empty hat. That's not at all hypocritical.Comment

You guys are so lucky not to have any hypocrites on your side of the fence! Must be nice.
As far as what has changed, it's the political leanings of the administration being more in line with members of forums like this. That shouldn't be so hard to grasp, even for the simpletons among us.
I don't love everything this administration has done, but I like more of what they have done than the previous one. Stuff like ending wars instead of starting them is a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned. Less war will go a long way toward saving money too.
As for the prisoner exchange, I read that with the wind down of the war in Afghanistan protocol dictates both sides release their prisoners. So if that is the case then these guys were going to be released anyway in the not-too-distant future. There was also concern that the Taliban wouldn't follow that protocol, so the decision was made to make the deal while we had the chance. So it may be a very well played move to use those prisoners to get ours back while we still could. Things are never as simple as soundbites designed to stir outrage try to make them.
Now if the one we got back is a deserter, then I expect he will stand trial for his actions. It would be un-American to just leave him with the enemy, even if he is suspected of acting un-American himself.Comment

The release of those four terrorists was certainly not a given either. This isn't a war that's going to end with an armistice, much less a peace, agreement, with all the combatants simply packing up their stuff and going home. You don't know that? Why are people as stupid and unreflective as you even allowed to express their opinions?Comment

"Unspecified"? I don't know about Laura but I'm talking to and about all the left-wing grime that posts or lurks here and used to post on TTips when it was still around. There was a thread critical of the administration pretty much every day until the Obama inauguration. Since then - NOTHING. MattB just admitted why that is.Comment
