  • TR: Bow Hut, Canada

This was just TGFTAT (too good for the Alberta thread).

The children were off school last week so we chose to rent them some gear and go for a 3 day intro to backcountry skiing in the vicinity of the celebrated Wapta Icefields.
Ultimately, 3 days of bad vis and hut-shaking wind -- oh well.

Striking out across Bow Lake into the blowing snow.
C'mon it'll be awesome! Have I ever lied to you?

The flats on the other side of the lake were nasty, rocky and wet -- but quite photogenic.

The canyon was in good shape for travel.

Breaking out into the cirque. More wind and bleakness. Snow cover was somewhat thin (a situation which improved dramatically during the course of our stay).
The hut is situated above the first set of cliffs at right.

In stark contrast, the epitome of luxury in the living quarters.

It proved impossible to coax anyone out to ski in these conditions. However I, myself, slayed the 6-turn slope
behind the hut multiple times. Affording my personal photographer the opportunity to document the proceedings
through the window from the comfort of the puzzle room.

No change in the weather for our exit but the new snow made for good fun once out of the wind-affected zone.

Well, that trip looked like more fun than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!

Seriously, almost any ski trip is better than no ski trip. Thanks for sharing.

Looks great! Although I'm pretty sure you photo shopped in that new fallen snow.

Looks like an excellent character building trip. The fact that they were smiling at the end confirms it was worthwhile. I see that a couple pair of new Scarpas were invited along. I hope you all had happy feet and get out in more favorable conditions.

Must be global warming....it's unheard of that such conditions would exist on the Wapta in mid-February! Good job sticking it out.
                  Yay!...(Drool)

Indeed we did. I was shocked.

As we approached and that eventuality was becoming apparent, I'm thinking, "did I bring any matches?!!"
