"A shell used for avalanche mitigation misfired Monday morning and injured two workers. One person, who works for Colorado Avalanche Information Center, is in fair condition. The other, who works for the Colorado Department of Transportation, is listed in serious condition.
One person, who works for Colorado Avalanche Information Center, is in fair condition. The other, who works for the Colorado Department of Transportation, is listed in serious condition. They were taken to St. Anthony's Hospital. The avalanche mitigation was being done on Loveland Pass. Tony Devito with CDOT said they started this mitigation due to Sunday night's snow and wind. Department spokeswoman Crystal Morgan says the accident occurred at an area known as the Seven Sisters on the east side of the pass, known for its steep chasms filled with snow and ice. According to CDOT, the shell detonated inside the gun towards the end of their operation. Devito said they have used this type of shell for 30 years and launch about 1,000 of them annually. Devito said this is the first time he knows of where this type of issue has occurred."
I sure hope they will be OK. I know they know what they are doing and accidents happen but having a shell explode on you is probably not what most people sign up for in the their job.
