  • Mt. Bachelor, Anyone Been There Recently?

It looks like Bachelor is the closest thing with any sort of snow, even at 8 hours away. None of my usual, nearer bc terrain has snow so I keep checking their website and their cams show nice looking snow with almost nobody skiing. What's with nobody seeming to be there? It would seem to be the only area from all of CA to central OR that has any snow. Has anyone been there this week?

There are some first hand accounts in the "Southern Cascades Conditions" thread. I skied New Years day and although they've gotten a bit more snow I don't think a lot has changed. There a frozen crust layer on top of everything that's not very enjoyable to ski (pretty much unskiable). So, you're relegated to the piste which is quite nice IMO. If you go be careful. It's easy to get confused between what's been groomed or not the higher you go on the hill. I had a pretty bad experience "off-piste"

McLaughlin has snow. So does Crater Lake.
Check my Flickr page in my signature.

Excellent place to stay on the 97 is Melita's.
Motel, restaurant, bar and the casino is only three miles down the road.
Might put up my TR if I'm feeling inspired...

Bachelor conditions: Groomers are great, Off Piste and nearby BC variable. Some thick surface hoar has created powdery conditions in places. Cow's face was real good last weekend as was Todd Ridge area. Other places...gnarly death crust and glare ice. For the most part real ugly in heavily treed areas. Going to Crater Lake tomorrow for 3 days, will update on Monday.

A TR would be awesome. I looked at a few of the pics but saw very little downhill skiing. I hope you guys found some.

Luckily Crater Lake did not get the ugly rain crust the Bachelor area did. We found generally good ski conditions Friday through Sunday although it was getting a bit mushy in the late afternoon. Lots of wind transport the 22nd through 24th left some nice pow on shady aspects. Garfield was bony but skiable in spots. Meadow skipping around the rim village area was quite nice and the Applegate Peak tour was very good (springlike) considering the low snow pack.
