have 2 wks off. where would you go for good snow right now. starting in LA driving - could go from sierra, New Mex, Co, UT, ID, Wy? resort wise - where would you go over the next 2 wks? and why? or should we just change plans and go hiking in the S.West? Thanks in advance.

Here's a handy map showing snow pack status for western U.S. Red is bad. Blue is good. Colorado was low but things have been improving. A friend just got back from road trip to Targee, Big Sky, Bridger Bowl and said conditions were decent.

    http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/ftpref/...SWEPercent.pdf

Same data as above but in clickable Google maps format.

I would go to Grand Targhee WY. I have a couple of friends who were just up there and said it was decent with good coverage and sufficient incoming precipt. Plus the local BC is producing as well. This is compared to the weak sauce that prevails on the west coast top to bottom..

I'm gonna say North/North Central Colorado, Jackson, Targhee, and Big Sky are all pretty good bets right now.

Thanks, that map looks interesting and a good resource. looks like a NW-SE line from Spokane to Denver is where the best snow is. probably central bc would be good too. whitewater (too far to drive)

Uh, that's season snowfall, 79 inch base. Still impressive but Baker has over 90 inch base by now probably and it's been a bad year. Besides, once you get a decent base the total base doesn't really matter because you ski on the surface and new snow. Looks like it's been pretty warm there too.

The mountain cam pictures look good all the same. Lots of snow at the top of Bear..

looks like a bleak week in the western US for new snow- I would look at this http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/...day_large.html more than percent of average snowpack maps linked above- I think everywhere in the Rockies anyway has a good base it's all about new snow at this point, no?
