  • TR: overnight at Copper Lake, Maroon Bells Wilderness

Headed up to Copper Lake from my cabin in Gothic, CO for a night out while temperatures were warmish and the pressure was high. About 1600 over 5 miles, and perhaps a bit much for the fishscales on my 10th Mountains, but doable with the odd stint of side-stepping and warm snow. Not the most elegant shelter (basically just dug a pit for my sleight tent), but it kept me warm enough, or at least not much colder than my typical shoulder-season backpacking trips.

An early sunset meant lots of reading. A near-full moon meant not much sleeping.

Skiing out was fast and occasionally good (there was a bit of breakable crust in inconvenient places).

    Beautiful!!!! Thanks so much....

I've used that trail to access Triangle Pass and the hot springs several times in the past. My God, what a sublime experience to be there in the winter!

Just chipmunks and rosy finches. Near my cabin there's a family of foxes, and the odd moose / mountain lion / coyote wander through, though they have yet to do so while I've been around...
