Going after the devil birds this weekend...we have an annual hunting trip down in the lower Salmon River breaks. Wonderful country! Does anyone else hunt these little bastards? They live on steep canyon walls (lots of nasty, steep hiking) in the desert and tend to fly DOWNHILL or run UPHILL when you approach, and they are FAST. The area is also infested with star thistle...picture wading through waist-high bushes with sewing needles stuck on them.

Also on the menu are Hungarian partridge, grouse, quail, rattlesnake (if desperate), and steelhead....maybe a bear if they get too frisky. No deer or elk as this is a controlled hunt area (and out of season) and it is difficult to get a tag. But the trophy possibilities abound!

You can always recognize a Chukar hunter: big thighs, small head. Sounds like a tele skier!

Chuk, chuk, chuk, chuk, chuk, chuk....

No chukar here in VT. We hunt timberdoodle (woodcock) and partridge (grouse). Do you use a .410 or 20g?

Chukar are a transplanted Asian variety of partridge...beautiful birds, aren't they?

I used to feel that way until I tried it. We eat everything we kill. It's definitely not for everyone.

Great to see the dry country down south, Bill!
That's a great, clean river too! Any fishing?
Not sure if there's a run on right now..
Get some snake.. Hell, we can get that within 10 miles
of here! Steelhead are fantastic on the bbq!

Flies too? They are not plants, fyi.

                Are you a vegetarian?

Yeah, I'm vegetarian. I kill flies only if they try to hurt me. Basic ethics. They are insects and probably not sentient.

People don't understand the lives other other animals and therefore decide, against obvious evidence, that they have no feelings, or that those feelings are trumped by a selfish and unnecessary desire to kill.

Why not hunt dogs and cats? Or other people?

                    Recipes? Soylent green is people!!

On a more serious note I would agree that the OP's second photo is over the top, but I have no aversion to hunting. Many anti-hunters have no problem eating mass produced meat which is more unethical IMO, thus the vegetarian question. My wife was strict vegetarian for quite a few years, but eats some wild game now. Then there are the ethical issues of things like palm oil which many vegetarians probably consume because it's in so many products but don't think about the impacts to animal populations.

In places people do eat dog and cat,
and even other people, though it's rare-- no pun..
                          Yuck, rare grandma????!

Biblical views have a lot to do with
our rationalization for the killing and
                          eating of other animals..
This summer at work a small grouse
                          suddenly appeared and followed us
all over the woods..It was either confused
or had been raised by humans..It seemed to
think we were ok to hang with but not to be
                          touched by..bizarre..
I think Raptor Jesus has gone too far here!

Don't worry there probably been more hunters die of heart attacks chasing those birds than birds shot by hunters.........
