  • ski boot half marathon running world record?

well if anyone wants a summer objective, breaking this record should be fairly straight forward. this dude wore a pair of Atomic Hawx....if you were to were Aliens or Raceborgs etc, running faster than 12:30/mile should not be a problem.

His toenails hate but we love him. Congratulations to Tom Bracey strapped into his Atomic Hawx Prime and ran the Birmingham Half Marathon to raise money for Protect Our Winters. Tom managed to break the world record for running a half marathon in ski boots at 2:27 (12:27/mile pace). Well done mate.  Tom achieved his fundraising […]

Looked the guy up. He ran the London Marathon 2 years ago. To enter that race in his age category (he’s now 23) requires a sub 3h time in a qualifying marathon. So fit young lad. Beating the ski boot time he set might be harder than it sounds.

That’s running at least 8.7 mph for 26.1 miles to qualify for the London Marathon.

Same guy was able to run half the distance at “only” 4.8 mph in ski boots. Brutal.

Brutal, impressive, and a bit confounding though clearly effective in terms of messaging.

On the other hand, the jaded cynic inside me thinks the POW campaign is about as self-aware as the corporate jetsetter's campaign to end climate change.

So I qualified for last November's NYC marathon with the exact purpose of running it in my F1 Carbons. The current Guinness World Record is exactly double what I can do in running shoes. Piece of cake. I applied to Guinness in May just to give it plenty of time.

They finally sent me the official guidelines -- it's all part of the weird application process, the full rules aren't posted online, they only send them to you after processing your application -- less than 2 weeks before the race.

          1. Commercially available ski boots must be used. These should meet international standards (ISO 5355). Details of the ski boot used during the attempt must be submitted before the attempt (see point 5 below).

          2. The ski boots must remain unmodified.

          3. The boots must remain fastened (i.e. buckled/tied up) for the duration of the attempt. If the boots are undone and progress on the course is made, then the attempt will be disqualified.

          4. If the claimant is running for a particular charity, details should be included, although this does not affect the attempt itself.

          5. Ski boots must be approved by Guinness World records prior to the attempt.

ISO 5355 essentially means clodhopper alpine DIN soles. So not even Gripwalk soles are legal. Not only do I not own alpine DIN boots, I definitely had no time to find some and get used to running in them. So the plan was off. My sister was running the race too, so I paced her instead.

i just find it amazing there is a guiness world record for running on pavement with ski boots on. why? is there a record for climbing everest in bare feet and flip flops? seems just as reasonable to me. I hope there is at least a record for a marathon while running with scissors or running with your hair on fire.

BTS, maybe there is a guiness record for a marathon on full skimo gear, on paved surfaces. not sure if you need to use skins or not. requirement is the skis/boots/skins weight the same at the end as they did at the start...

So I watched the video of this guy sprinting across the finish line, and thought "There's no way someone can run like that in ski mode, he's got to have them in walk mode." And, sure enough:

I would consider that to be a violation of:

"3. The boots must remain fastened (i.e. buckled/tied up) for the duration of the attempt. If the boots are undone and progress on the course is made, then the attempt will be disqualified."

I wouldn't think that the half marathon rules would be any different from the ones I was sent. Previous record holders, it would appear, did it in ski mode. And the plot thickens...

If they have to meet standard ISO 5355, does that mean alpine boots, no bellows, no walk mode?

And speaking of a lack of self-awareness, may I sponsor you with: telemark skiers fighting for better boots!?

Ha ha. Yep. Maybe there’s a speed skiing on grass record just waiting for some idjit to break.

As is the case with everything, the answer is money. Guinness World Records Ltd is a standalone company that exists for this purpose. It is not part of the beer company. You can apply to set a record for free, but as I found out, their "standard 12 weeks" turnaround is actually much longer. But, you can pay $$$ for priority processing. If you're serious about setting a record, that's pretty much how you have to do it. And so the greater number of wacky records they sanction, the more money they make.

In big city marathons, the ground underfoot next to all the aid stations can become a greasy mess of water, gatorade, paper cup pulp, and squished fruit. Not unlike a frat house basement floor. I would feel MUCH more comfortable for those ~50yd stretched on skimo gear & skins.

Ha. My sister was doing it -- her first marathon -- so I figured doing it in ski boots would let us run at the same pace and both be challenged. I have some beyond-clapped-out F1 Carbons that would have been perfect. So I dropped down to the desert for a flat half that December to grab the qualifier. Then got the bad news later.

Turns out running it with her in running shoes was plenty fun regardless. By that late in the afternoon, the spectators are D-R-U-N-K, haha.

ok so if that ISO 5355 rule eliminates Skimo race boots, the easiest thing would a simple minimum weight rule. I have a pair of Hawx 120's, I don't even like to walk in them...
